UM Team Visits Technical University of Delft, (TU Delft), The Netherlands

UM VENTuRE team with Prof. Antonio Laguna (TU Delft) visiting the Tow Tank Facilities

A contingent of four post-graduate students and two professors from the Department of Mechanical Engineering recently participated in the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft), Delft, The Netherlands.

The scope of the visit was to observe the wave tank that is used in the 3ME (Mechanical, Maritime, and Materials Engineering) faculty. The wave tank in question is a 140 m long wave tank with a width of 4.22 m and a maximum depth of 2.5 m. A carriage is used to tow scale models of ships and vessels being studied up to a maximum speed of 7 m/s, whilst a wave generator on one end of the tank is used to create different sized waves at set frequencies to experiment on the seafaring characteristics of the scale model being tested. The tow tank may also be used to experiment on ship models as well as on stationary models such as floating PV farms to model the performance in different conditions.

The contingent also had the possibility to visit the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering wind tunnel laboratories, where the different wind tunnels are used for teaching and research in the faculty.
